Can you take dirhams out of Morocco when you leave?
No, you should not take dirhams out of Morocco — the dirham is a closed currency, it’s technically illegal to export more than a token amount (around 2,000 MAD), and you can’t exchange it easily abroad anyway. The practical advice is to spend down or convert your cash before you fly home.
Change leftover dirhams back to euros, pounds or dollars at a bank or exchange desk before airport security, keeping the ATM receipt or exchange slip some counters ask for. There are exchange desks landside at the main airports, but rates get worse the closer you are to the gate.
A simple tactic is to withdraw conservatively in your last few days and use up notes on meals, tips and souvenirs. Any small coins you can’t spend make fine keepsakes, since nowhere overseas will take them.
