Sahara & desert trips
Can you visit the desert from Marrakech without staying overnight?
You can only visit a desert-like landscape from Marrakech in a day — the Agafay "stone desert" is about an hour away and offers dunes-free desert scenery, camel rides and camps for lunch or sunset. The real sand-dune Sahara at Merzouga or Zagora is far too distant for a day trip, so an overnight (or more) is essential for that.
Agafay is a rocky, moon-like desert rather than golden dunes, but it delivers big open landscapes, quad biking, camel rides and Berber-style camps close to the city, which makes it popular for travellers short on time. Sunset there is genuinely beautiful.
If your heart is set on the classic tall Sahara dunes, plan at least a two-day trip to Merzouga. For a taste of desert atmosphere without leaving Marrakech for the night, Agafay is the answer.
