Sahara & desert trips

What shoes should you wear for a camel trek in Erg Chebbi?

For a camel trek in Erg Chebbi, wear closed shoes you can slip on and off easily — trainers or lightweight walking shoes are ideal, and many people bring sandals for around the camp. You want something that keeps the fine, sometimes hot sand out but is easy to shake free, since you’ll be getting on and off the camel and walking short stretches in soft dune.

Avoid brand-new footwear and anything precious, as fine desert sand gets into everything. Ankle socks help stop sand rubbing, and a spare pair for after the trek is welcome.

Many travellers actually go barefoot on the dunes themselves at sunset, which is lovely on cool evening sand. Keep sturdier shoes for the camel ride and camp, and you’ll have the right thing for each moment.
