Are there marked hiking trails in the Rif mountains?

The Rif mountains have some hiking trails, most accessibly around Chefchaouen and in Talassemtane National Park, but waymarking is limited and inconsistent, so a local guide is recommended for anything beyond the popular short walks. The Rif is beautiful but less developed for trekking than the High Atlas.

From Chefchaouen you can walk to the Spanish Mosque viewpoint easily, and longer routes head to the Akchour waterfalls and the "God’s Bridge" rock arch, which are well-trodden and stunning. Deeper into Talassemtane, trails are wilder and harder to follow alone.

Bear in mind the Rif is also a sensitive cannabis-growing region, another reason a knowledgeable local guide is wise for off-the-beaten-track routes. For casual hikes, stick to the established Akchour and viewpoint trails.
