Can you hike in the Atlas Mountains without a permit?

Yes, you can hike most Atlas Mountains trails without a permit — general trekking in the valleys and hills around Imlil, the Ourika Valley and elsewhere is open and free, with the notable exception of Mount Toubkal, which now requires a licensed guide. For everyday walks, you just set off.

While permits aren’t needed for general routes, hiring a local guide is worthwhile for anything beyond a short marked walk, both for navigation on unmarked paths and to support the mountain communities. Multi-day treks and the Toubkal ascent specifically need a guide.

Respect the villages you pass through, dress modestly in settlements, and check weather and conditions, which change fast at altitude. For casual valley hikes you’re free to explore; for the big peaks, arrange the required guide.
