What is a typical riad breakfast in Morocco?
A typical riad breakfast in Morocco is a generous spread of fresh breads and Moroccan pancakes — msemen and baghrir — with butter, honey, jam and olive oil, plus eggs, fruit, yoghurt or cheese, and mint tea or coffee with orange juice. It’s usually included in the room rate and served on the terrace or courtyard.
The breads are the star: msemen (flaky square pancakes), baghrir (spongy "thousand-hole" pancakes), khobz (round bread) and sometimes harcha (semolina flatbread), all eaten with amlou (argan-almond spread), honey or jam. Freshly squeezed orange juice is a highlight.
Eggs are often cooked to order, and portions are large, so it sets you up well for a day of sightseeing. It’s one of the quiet pleasures of staying in a riad rather than a hotel.
