Does it snow in the Atlas Mountains in December?
Yes, it snows in the High Atlas Mountains in December — the higher peaks and passes regularly get snow through winter, and the Oukaïmeden ski resort near Marrakech typically opens when conditions allow. The mountains can look genuinely wintry while Marrakech below stays mild.
Snow can affect high routes like the Tizi n’Tichka pass on the way to the desert, occasionally slowing or closing them briefly, so winter mountain travel needs a little flexibility. Villages at altitude are cold, and trekking high peaks becomes a proper winter undertaking.
For most travellers, December snow is a scenic bonus rather than an obstacle — you can see snow-capped peaks from Marrakech on a clear day. If you want to ski or play in the snow, Oukaïmeden is only a couple of hours from the city.
