Are riads noisy at night in the medina?

Riads are usually quiet inside at night because they face inward onto a central courtyard, insulating rooms from the street — but you can still hear medina sounds like the pre-dawn call to prayer, early deliveries and occasional late activity. The traditional courtyard design genuinely muffles outside noise better than a street-facing hotel window.

Rooms opening onto the courtyard can pick up sound from other guests or breakfast being set up, while rooftop rooms hear more of the city. The dawn call to prayer, around sunrise, carries everywhere in Morocco and is part of the experience.

If you’re a light sleeper, ask for a room away from the courtyard and reception, and pack earplugs. Overall, riads tend to be more peaceful at night than their busy-medina location suggests.
