Do Moroccan riads have heating in winter?

Heating in Moroccan riads varies a lot — better riads have electric heaters, air-conditioning units that also heat, or even fireplaces, but the thick-walled traditional design can leave rooms genuinely cold in winter, so always check that heating is provided. Morocco’s winter nights, especially inland and at altitude, are colder than many visitors expect.

The same stone and tile that keep riads cool in summer make them slow to warm in winter, and central heating is rare. Look for a room with a working heater, and expect extra blankets to be provided.

Pack warm layers and sleepwear for a winter riad stay, and ask specifically about heating when booking rather than assuming it. Marrakech and Fes can be surprisingly chilly after dark from December to February.
