Is a riad better than a hotel in Marrakech?

For most visitors a riad is the better choice in Marrakech — these traditional courtyard houses in the medina offer character, calm, personal service and a genuine sense of place that a standard hotel can’t match. You stay within the old city, steps from the souks, in a tranquil interior world of tilework, plunge pools and rooftop terraces.

Hotels in the newer Gueliz and Hivernage districts win on space, big pools, parking and predictability, which suits families or anyone wanting resort facilities. Riads are more intimate, often small, and their medina location means arriving by taxi to the nearest gate and walking the last stretch.

If you want authentic Marrakech atmosphere and don’t mind smaller rooms and lane-navigation, choose a riad. If you prioritise a large pool, easy parking and modern amenities, a Gueliz hotel may fit better. Many people do a riad for the experience.
