How do vegans order tagine in Morocco?
Vegans can order a vegetable tagine (tagine de légumes) in most Moroccan restaurants, but should specify no meat, no butter (smen) and no eggs, since some vegetable dishes are cooked in animal fat or stock. A clearly stated "vegan, no animal products" — ideally in French or written in Arabic — avoids misunderstandings.
Vegetable tagines, couscous with vegetables, lentil and bean dishes (loubia, bissara), zaalouk, taktouka and fresh bread with olives and oil make a genuinely good vegan spread. Confirm the couscous isn’t made with meat broth.
In tourist areas and cities, staff increasingly understand veganism, but in small towns explaining it plainly helps. Carrying a short note in Arabic listing what you don’t eat, and sticking to naturally plant-based dishes, makes eating vegan in Morocco easy.
