If a petit taxi driver refuses to use the meter, either insist politely ("compteur, s’il vous plaît") or agree a fixed fare before you set off — and if neither works, get out and take another taxi. Refusing the meter usually means a "tourist price," so settling the terms before the journey starts is essential.

Have a rough idea of the fair fare for your route (ask your riad), so you can negotiate from a sensible figure. Never leave the price open, as a dispute at the destination is stressful and the driver holds the advantage.

For longer or non-metered grand-taxi trips, agreeing the price upfront is normal and expected. If a driver is being unreasonable, there are always more taxis, so walking away is your strongest card.
