Is the henna scam common in Jemaa el-Fnaa?
Yes, the henna scam is common in Jemaa el-Fnaa — henna artists may grab your hand and start applying a design uninvited, then demand a high price, so keep your hands to yourself and don’t let anyone begin without an agreed price. It’s one of the square’s best-known hassles.
Beyond the pushy pricing, some use black "henna" containing PPD dye, which can cause nasty skin reactions, so the health risk is real too. A firm "no thank you" and keeping moving is the best defence.
If you genuinely want henna, agree the design and price first, choose a calm artist (ideally recommended by your riad), and insist on natural reddish-brown henna. Otherwise, don’t engage with anyone reaching for your hands in the square.
