Many riads in Fes have air conditioning, especially mid-range and upmarket ones, but budget and very traditional riads may rely on the natural cool of thick walls and courtyards instead, so check before booking if you’re travelling in summer. Fes gets hot in July and August, so AC is worth confirming.

The traditional design — high ceilings, tiled floors, a shaded central courtyard — keeps riads naturally cooler than the street, which is why some older places manage without AC. But in a heatwave, air conditioning in the bedroom makes a real difference to sleep.
