Is it OK to photograph people in Moroccan markets?
It’s only OK to photograph people in Moroccan markets if you ask first — many Moroccans dislike being photographed without permission, for religious and personal reasons, and some who agree will expect a small tip. A quick smile and gesture towards your camera, or a word of "photo?", is the courteous approach.
Stallholders and performers (like the water sellers and snake charmers in Jemaa el-Fnaa) often pose specifically for tips, so agree on a small amount first to avoid a demand afterwards. General street and architecture shots are fine; it’s close-up portraits of individuals that need consent.
If someone says no, respect it and move on. Being discreet, friendly and willing to pay a few dirhams for a portrait keeps everyone comfortable and gets you better, more natural photos anyway.
