Do you need an international driving permit to rent a car in Morocco?
You don’t strictly need an International Driving Permit to rent a car in Morocco if your national licence is in the Latin alphabet (like a UK, EU or US licence), but carrying an IDP is recommended as a cheap safeguard. Most rental companies accept a valid home licence held for at least a year, along with your passport and a credit card.
An IDP is genuinely useful if your licence isn’t in Roman script, and it can smooth things over at a police checkpoint or in the event of an accident, where an official translation helps. It costs little to obtain before you travel.
Whatever you carry, keep the car’s rental papers and insurance in the glovebox, as checkpoints are common and police will ask for documents. Drive defensively — local traffic, mopeds and rural roads demand full attention.
