Is Agadir too touristy compared to Essaouira?

Agadir is more of a modern, purpose-built beach resort than Essaouira, so if you want Moroccan character and history, Essaouira is the more atmospheric choice, while Agadir suits those after a straightforward sun-and-beach holiday. Agadir was rebuilt after a 1960 earthquake, so it lacks an old medina and feels contemporary and package-holiday oriented.

Essaouira keeps its walled medina, fishing port, ramparts and artsy, bohemian feel, all wrapped in strong winds and Atlantic light. Agadir offers a long sandy beach, reliable sunshine, big hotels and calmer swimming, but little historic atmosphere.

Which is "better" depends on what you want: Essaouira for culture and charm, Agadir for a relaxed beach base and warmer, sheltered swimming. Many travellers prefer Essaouira for a short Moroccan coastal fix.
