Is Imlil good for a day trip from Marrakech?
Imlil sits at around 1,740 m at the foot of Mount Toubkal, North Africa’s highest peak, about 90 minutes from Marrakech. It is the best day trip if you want to walk: village paths through walnut groves, mule tracks, and lunch in a Berber house with the mountains right above you.
Imlil is a working mountain village, not a resort. It sits at about 1,740 metres in a bowl of walnut and cherry terraces, and it is the trailhead everyone uses to climb Mount Toubkal, which at 4,167 metres is the highest peak in North Africa.
For a day trip you do not climb Toubkal — you walk the valley. Paths link the hamlets above the village, following irrigation channels through the terraces, with the high ridges filling the sky above you.
The village itself is worth the time: mules still carry the loads, and the small square is where guides, farmers and travelers all end up. Lunch is usually a tagine in a family house with a terrace facing the mountains.
