Can you visit Ait Ben Haddou in one day from Marrakech?
Yes, but it is a long day. You cross the High Atlas over the Tizi n’Tichka pass, spend time in the UNESCO-listed ksar of Ait Ben Haddou, and see Ouarzazate’s film studios before driving back. Expect around 12 hours door to door — many travelers prefer to continue into the desert instead.
This is the classic crossing of the High Atlas: the road climbs to the Tizi n’Tichka pass at 2,260 metres, with switchbacks, Berber villages and long views back over the Haouz plain before it drops into the south.
Ait Ben Haddou is the reason most people make the trip. The fortified ksar of packed earth has stood above the Ounila river since the 11th century, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987, and has stood in for the ancient world in Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator and Game of Thrones.
Ouarzazate, half an hour further on, is Morocco’s film town. You can see the Atlas Studios and the Kasbah Taourirt, the mud-brick palace that once belonged to the Glaoui family.

Good to know
It is a long day
Around 12 hours with roughly 7 of them driving. If you have two days or more, the same road leads to the Sahara and is far less rushed.
Best season
Year-round. In winter the pass can hold snow, which is beautiful but occasionally slows the crossing.
What to bring
Sun protection, a layer for the pass, and comfortable shoes — the climb through the ksar is on uneven earth steps.

Questions about this day trip
Is one day enough for Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate?
It is enough to see both properly, but it makes for a twelve-hour day. If your schedule allows two days, we would rather take you on towards the desert and let you enjoy the same road at a human pace.
Which films were shot at Ait Ben Haddou?
Lawrence of Arabia, The Jewel of the Nile, Gladiator and Game of Thrones among many others. The Atlas Studios in Ouarzazate hold sets from several of them.
Can this day trip continue into the Sahara?
Yes. This is the first leg of our Marrakech to Merzouga routes, so we can simply keep going instead of turning back. Tell us your dates and we will price both options.
