How far is Essaouira from Marrakech?
Essaouira is roughly 175 km west of Marrakech, about two and a half hours each way. The drive crosses the argan forest, where you can stop at a women’s cooperative. You get several hours in the walled medina, the fishing port and the ramparts before heading back.
Essaouira is the Atlantic antidote to Marrakech: whitewashed and blue instead of red, breezy instead of baking, and small enough to walk end to end in an afternoon. Its walled medina is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The ramparts are the postcard — cannon-lined walls with the ocean breaking below them. The working fishing port beside them is the real thing, full of blue boats, gulls and grills where the morning catch is cooked in front of you.
Inside the walls, the medina is laid out on a grid, which makes it far easier to navigate than Fes or Marrakech. It has long drawn woodworkers, painters and musicians, and the thuya-wood workshops are still clustered in the same lanes.

Is Essaouira worth a day trip or should I stay overnight?
A day trip gives you about four or five hours in town, which covers the ramparts, the port and the medina. If you want the sunset and a slower evening, stay a night — we can arrange the transfer either way.
Can you see the goats in the argan trees?
Sometimes, along the roadside on the way. It is a genuine local sight, though some spots are staged for tips — your driver will tell you which is which.
Is there time for the beach?
Usually yes, briefly. The beach is wide and walkable, but the wind means it suits a stroll more than sunbathing.
