Tangier is generally safe to walk around alone in the evening, especially along the main boulevards, the marina and the busy parts of the medina, though it pays to be a little more streetwise than in Marrakech. The city has smartened up hugely in recent years, and the seafront and central areas are lively and well-lit after dark.

The quieter edges of the medina and the port area can feel rougher late at night, and solo travellers — women in particular — may get comments or persistent offers of "help" or hashish. A polite, firm refusal and a confident pace handle almost all of it.

Stick to streets with people and open cafés, keep your phone and valuables discreet, and use a petit taxi rather than walking through empty lanes late on. As a base for exploring the north, Tangier is welcoming; just apply normal port-city caution after dark.
