Safety & solo travel
How safe is the night train from Tangier to Marrakech for solo travellers?
The overnight train from Tangier towards Marrakech is a reasonably safe option for solo travellers, and booking a bed in a couchette compartment is the key to a comfortable, secure trip. A first-class couchette gives you a lockable four- or six-berth compartment, which is far better than dozing in an open seat, and requesting a single-sex compartment is possible when you book.
Keep your valuables — passport, phone, money — physically on you in a pouch while you sleep, and loop a bag strap around your leg or the luggage rail. Petty theft, not violence, is the realistic risk on any night train.
Note that services and routings change, and much of this corridor is now served by the fast Al Boraq line plus connections, so check current ONCF timetables when you book. If the overnight option doesn’t suit, the daytime high-speed and express trains are quick, modern and easy for solo travel.
