Is a suitcase or backpack better for Morocco?

A backpack is generally better for Morocco because the medinas have narrow, uneven, cobbled lanes with steps where wheeled cases struggle, and riads often can’t be reached by car — but a sturdy suitcase is fine if you’re mostly staying put in hotels with transfers. The deciding factor is how much you’ll be hauling your bag through old-town streets.

If you’re moving between cities and riads, a backpack (or a hybrid wheeled-and-carry bag) copes with the cobbles, steps and the walk from the taxi to the riad door far better than spinner wheels. For a single-base city break with porter service, a suitcase is no problem.

A soft-sided bag also squeezes into grand taxis and bus holds more easily. Choose based on your itinerary: multi-stop and medina-heavy favours a backpack; one comfortable hotel favours a case.
