Haggling & shopping

How much should you haggle down in the Marrakech souks?

In the Marrakech souks, expect to pay somewhere between a third and a half of the first price quoted, so counter-offer at around 30–40% of the opening figure and settle in the middle. Sellers open high with tourists, and the "right" price is whatever you’re both happy with — there’s no fixed rate, only what the item is worth to you.

Start by knowing roughly what you want to pay, open below it, stay friendly, and be genuinely willing to walk away, which is your strongest tool and often brings the price down as you leave. Buying several items together also earns a better rate.

Don’t haggle hard over trivial sums or for things you don’t intend to buy, and remember a few dirhams mean more to the seller than to you. Aim for a price that feels fair rather than a "win," and keep it good-humoured.
