Is Google Translate accurate for Darija?

Google Translate is only partly reliable for Darija — it handles Modern Standard Arabic reasonably but struggles with Moroccan Darija, which is a spoken dialect that differs significantly, so translations can be stilted or wrong. It’s useful for gist and single words, less so for natural conversation.

For practical purposes it’s fine for translating a menu, a sign or a simple phrase, and the camera and voice features help in a pinch. But don’t rely on it for nuanced exchanges, and be ready for locals to find its Darija odd.

A better bet for interaction is a few learned phrases plus French, which Google translates far more accurately. Download the Arabic and French language packs for offline use before you travel.
