What should a woman wear to a public hammam in Morocco?

In a public (local) hammam, women typically keep their underwear bottoms on and go topless, so bring a pair of knickers you don’t mind getting wet, plus flip-flops. The hammam is single-sex, staffed and used by local women, and full nudity is not the norm — bottoms on, top off is the standard. Many women bring a spare set of underwear to change into afterwards.

You’ll also want your own towel, a change of clothes, and any products you like, though the essentials — black soap (savon beldi), a kessa exfoliating glove and ghassoul clay — are cheap to buy on the spot or included if you pay for a scrub. Tie long hair up.

Tourist or spa hammams are more private and often provide disposable underwear and towels, so you can wear less or follow the attendant’s lead. If you’re unsure, ask your riad which type they’re sending you to and what to bring.
