Is a day trip to the Agafay desert worth it?
Yes, a day (or half-day) trip to the Agafay desert is worth it if you want desert scenery close to Marrakech without the long drive to the Sahara — it’s about an hour from the city, offering rocky, rolling "stone desert" landscapes, camel rides, quad biking and stylish camps for lunch or sunset. It’s not sand dunes, but it’s a real desert atmosphere near town.
Agafay is popular for sunset dinners under the stars, camel or horse rides, and adventure activities, all with the Atlas Mountains as a backdrop. It works brilliantly when you can’t spare the two-plus days a Merzouga trip needs.
Just set expectations: this is a lunar, rocky desert, not the tall golden dunes of Erg Chebbi. For a quick, scenic desert fix from Marrakech, though, Agafay delivers — we can arrange a sunset trip with dinner.
