Is Meknes worth a day trip from Fes?
Meknes is about an hour from Fes and far quieter than its famous neighbour. It was the 17th-century capital of Sultan Moulay Ismail, and you can see the monumental Bab Mansour gate, his mausoleum and the vast Heri es-Souani granaries without the crowds of the Fes medina.
Meknes was the capital Morocco built and then largely forgot. Sultan Moulay Ismail moved his court here in the 17th century and spent decades raising walls, gates and granaries on a scale meant to rival Versailles.
Bab Mansour is the result everyone photographs — a monumental gate of zellige and carved stone facing the open square of Place el-Hedim. Behind it lies a medina that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and noticeably calmer than the one in Fes.
The most surprising building is the least decorated: Heri es-Souani, the royal granaries and stables, where enormous vaulted halls kept grain cool for thousands of horses. Its scale is the clearest thing Meknes has left of its imperial ambition.
